A Rink Filled for Avery! – Banting Marauders vs. OPP Civics

On March 8th, first responders from police, fire, and EMS, along with a full capacity crowd from Banting Memorial High School packed into the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex to pay tribute to 18-year-old Avery Andrew who was tragically killed in a car crash New Year’s Day.

The “Fill the Rink for Avery” event was organized by officers from the Nottawasaga OPP Detachment and staff and students from Banting Memorial High School.

The Fill the Rink event, saw the Banting Memorial High School “Marauders” challenge officers from the Nottawasaga OPP Detachment “Civics” to a friendly game of hockey to raise funds for the newly created Avery Andrew Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will help Banting students with post-secondary education costs. A tribute before the game saw friends speak about Avery and the school choir and concert band provided all the music.

Students who attended the game bought their way out of class by purchasing a commemorative game shirt; more than 600 were sold.

The fundraising total hasn’t been tallied yet, but the event likely raised thousands for the fund.

A special thank you to F & P Manufacturing in Tottenham for supporting the event and covering the cost of the buses for the students to attend the event from Banting Memorial High School!
